Master Harold and the Boys Essay

1:50 pm by admin. Filed under: English

Throughout “Master Harold” … and the Boys, Athol Fugard describes many emotions that take place between the characters, to which different reactions are noted. An emotion is a subjective response, usually accompanied by a physiological change, which is interpreted in a particular way by the individual and often leads to a change in behavior (Psychology 314). The emotions are not just expressed vocally, but they are also expressed in stage directions. The primary emotions in the play are love, happiness, and anger. In each, the reactions can be seen as good and bad.

Love is an emotion that is expressed in many different ways throughout the play. One way that love is expressed is through Sam’s love for dancing. He has been dancing since Hally was a young child and now he teaches all his dances to Willie. Another kind of love that is expressed in this play is the love for another human being. Hally expresses his love for his father when he says, “I love him, Sam”(58). Also, Sam’s love for Hally is unbelievable: he loves Hally like a son, because Sam helps him with his schoolwork, plays checkers with him, and also made a kite for him. In this play love is an emotion that is amazing and the characters show the benefits in their reaction to it. (more…)

Other methods of decontamination include using another chemical called Bti, a chemical that works similarly as the methoprene but works exclusively on mosquito and blackfly larvae. The last suggestion is to use dragonflies, and fathead minnows, for control measures. A Day at the Fair

1:58 pm by admin. Filed under: Miscellaneous

Aah, the fair! This once-a-year experience is something not to be missed! The fair can invoke many memories of days gone by, both good and bad. A day at the fair can be fun, educational, and very tiring!
As children, we ran around taking in the sights and sounds of the midway games and the towering rides, the smell of barbecue and sugary-sweet candy in the air, dizzy with excitement and unable to decide what to do first. We begged our parents for tickets for the rides, and usually they grudgingly gave in. We gorged ourselves, if allowed, on tangy, chewy caramel apples and sweet, melt-in-your-mouth, sugary cotton candy. Then, as teens, the girls and boys went together in groups, the boys competing with each other to win the biggest stuffed teddy bear or cartoon character for his girl playing the ring toss, the basketball shoot, or the balloon-darts. As young adults, we enjoyed accompanying a new sweetheart to a grandstand concert full of country music, lights, and the smell of popcorn and beer, or an up-close-and-personal ride through the tunnel of love. Those were the days!

The fair is always fun. Whether you go to eat the different and often exotic foods, check out the exhibits, buy things that aren’t sold in stores from the many vendors, or sit around listening to a local band, there is always fun to be had. Vendors abound, hawking goods from silver jewelry to the latest satellite-TV technology. The best time is after dark, when the night explodes into a kaleidoscope of colored lights, each ride brightening the horizon while you listen to screams of fear and delight from the riders. Near the closing of the fair, fireworks explode into the air in a variety of colors and shapes, bringing the smell of gunpowder and welcome memories of July Fourth picnics and parties.

In the novel Night, Elie Wiesel gives a heart-wrenching personal account of life in concentration camps. As a young boy he was deep in his faith, and unknown to him, that faith would soon be challenged. When he was only fourteen, his nightmare began. As Nazi troops entered his town, they made all the Jewish families move into a ghetto. Once a week groups would be taken away in trucks. Elie and his family were the last group to be deported. They were put in cattle cars with only two loaves of bread and a bucket of water. The ride lasted three days without a stop. When the train finally stopped it was at Birkenau. There they were inspected and those who weren’t strong went to the crematories.

Essay on When I Grow Up

4:09 pm by admin. Filed under: English

Ever since I can remember, school has been a huge part of my life. When I was younger I used to love school and going to school was, to some extent, the highlight of my life at that time. I loved learning: reading, writing, math, everything and anything having to do with school. To me, school was an awesome place to be. Maybe it was the fact that my parents have pushed learning and school on me since I was little, or maybe I really simply yearned for knowledge. It’s unclear to me now, since those days of waking up eager and ready to go to school are long gone. The reasons I go to college now, however, are pretty clear to me: my parents & family wanted me to, my long term career goals, and the fact that I simply want to.

As a little kid I quickly learned how important school and an education was to both of my parents. Coming home with a good report card with all “A’s” was about as good as it gets to them, and I was always showered with praise and gifts. I soon realized that doing good in school meant good things for me! So, I tried my hardest and did my best until I got to high school. High school was different, with so many new people and new things to do and experience, that I have to admit that I was quickly distracted and my grades weren’t as great as they had been when I was younger. My parents jumped on me quickly, making sure I never forgot what a bad grade would mean to them, to my social life, and even to my future. They also pushed college, and the fact that I basically was never given a choice about going to college, it was one of two choices: move out, or go to college. Sometimes I admit that I felt like they were shoving college down my throat, but in the end, I know that they really care and that me doing good for myself is really what’s important to them. An Opera Singer Much More Than A Voice

12:30 pm by admin. Filed under: Music

When we think about opera, we examine a work of art that unites music, drama, dancing, stagecraft and the scenic arts, which we view primarily as a musical experience. However, opera is a vocal art. Opera relies upon the opera singer, who is the participant in the opera’s drama, to bring forth the interpretation of song and music in which the composer has written (Encyclopedia Britannica). There have been many opinions on rather or not the opera singer is merely a voice. Though the gift of voice is essential in becoming and being an opera singer, the overall requirements are much more complex.

The opera singer is much more than a voice, but a human being. In this career field it is highly competitive, stressful and there are limitations on achieving artistic and financial success (Clifton Ware 30). With this knowledge it does not detour the collegiate study of becoming an opera singer. The typical lifestyle of a career bound opera singer does have its down falls at some point in their career. They sometimes began to experience depression, being lonely while on the road, family issues, coping with rejection, and financial doubts. With these dilemmas their life is out of control, with work and their career consuming every aspect of it (Ware 31). In order for the singer to maintain stability in their life, it is very vital to for he/she to prioritize least to greatest. Family relationships are key in providing a secure and comfortable life, which would ease the frustration the opera singer, feels. In a Classical Singer interview, world – renowned stage director Fabrizio Melano says “ Stay centered as much as possible and don’t get distracted by all the craziness going on around you. That requires doing work on yourself. The opera singer has to find their center in everything they do and not just as singers but as human beings.” (more…)

The Physics of Stopping

4:02 pm by admin. Filed under: Physics

The question “safety is not related to how fast you go but how fast you stop” can not be answered without looking at the physics concepts involved. The answerer is not as clear cut as it may seem as factors of momentum, that is inertia in motion, inertia, mass, change in momentum, and impulse, all must be taken into account.

The first concept we must look at momentum. Momentum is inertia in motion, which can be found by multiplying mass and velocity. If you increase either mass or velocity, you will increase the momentum, we need to look at this as the faster you go the more momentum you have, and therefore the more dangerous you are, so speed is a danger, which is by no means a safe act.

The second important concept is the concept of impulse. Impulse changes momentum. Finding impulse is attained by multiplying force and time interval, change either of the two and the impulse is different. If you decelerate quickly you will have a smaller impulse, than a longer smoother deceleration. In the topic statement it states that it is not how fast you travel but how quickly you stop, if you were to travel at 60km.h-1 and stopped in 20m opposed to traveling at 100km.h-1 and stopping in the same distance, you would feel a shorter impulse, which makes the stopping ‘rougher.’ (more…)
